This song draws connections between racism, capitalism and neo-liberalism. It's about the tension of living in a city that is majority people of color and run by white liberal democrats. Milwaukee has the highest rates of black male incarceration and unemployment in the country and is the most segregated in terms of both race and class, yet is often praised and portrayed as a progressive stronghold. What does it mean to live in a city that is put on a pedestal for it's liberal values while people of color are being pushed farther to the margins and being killed by police and white vigilantes with no consequences? What does it mean to live in a city run by liberal democrats that is growing more and more segregated? Derek Williams, Corey Stingley, and Dontre Hamilton (along with Daniel Bell, Ernest Lacy, Darius Simmons, Bo Morrison, James Perry and many more) are the names of black men killed by police or white vigilantes in the Milwaukee area. White liberals must examine, deconstruct and destroy their complicity with white supremacy and violence (physical, economic and emotional) toward people of color.
